This appeal presents the question left undecided in People v Belton (55 NY2d 49, 54, n 3): whether, when police engage in a lawful search pursuant to the automobile exception to the State and Federal Constitutions’ warrant requirements, they may search a locked container located in the passenger compartment of an automobile.
