Ivette Rivera y Guillermo Tello, compraron unos boletos a la Eastern Airlines para viajar de San Juan a Santo Domingo y de regreso a San Juan. El 30 de septiembre de 1982, día del viaje de regreso a San Juan, cuando esperaban para abordar el vuelo 949 de dicha línea aérea, procedente de Miami, un agente de la compañía aérea les informó que el vuelo no haría escala en Santo Domingo debido a una “avería o desperfecto mecánico inesperado”.
