NATURE OF THE CASE

Following a three-day joint trial in the circuit court of Cook County, a jury found defendant, William Negron, and his codefendant, Roberto Almodovar, guilty of the first-degree murders (720 ILCS 5/9— 1(a)(1) (West 1992)) of Amy Merkes and Jorge Rodriguez, the attempted first-degree murders (720 ILCS 5/8 — 4, 9 — 1 (West 1992)) of Kennelly Saez and Jackie Grande, and aggravated battery with a firearm (720 ILCS 5/12 — 4.2(a)(1) (West 1992)) of Jackie Grande.
