OPINION OF THE COURT

Respondent Richard Jay Shapiro was admitted to the practice of law in the State of New York by the First Judicial Department on August 6, 1974. At all times relevant to this proceeding, he maintained an office for the practice of law within the First Judicial Department.

On May 7, 2009, respondent was convicted by a jury in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York of one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States in violation of 18 USC § 371 and two counts of tax evasion in violation of 26 USC § 7201, both felonies under the United States…
