In September, 1915, Gibson, Hamilton & Co., a partnership, entered into a contract with the United States for the construction of levees in Adams county, Miss. In order to obtain the contract, it was necessary that the firm furnish a bond to secure the government, and also to protect those furnishing labor and material for the construction of the levees. U. S. Comp. Stat. § 6923; 8 Fed. Stat. Anno. § 6, pp. 374, 375. Accordingly, Gibson. Hamilton & Co. furnished a bond for 812,600, signed, in solido, by Henry R.
