LAND, Justice.

The statement of the case is made by the trial judge in his opinion as follows:

“The State of Louisiana brings this action in trespass contending that The Jefferson Island Salt Mining Co., Inc. has in its mining operations, encroached uppn certain property, the ownership of which is claimed by the State, and thereupon having extracted therefrom a certain quantity of salt. It alleges that the trespass was committed willfully, and is accordingly entitled to damages based upon the value of said salt, which is fixed at the km of $5,165,280.00, with legal interest from date of…
