OPINION

BEVILACQUA, Chief Justice.

This is a criminal appeal from the defendant’s judgment of conviction for first-degree murder in violation of G.L. 1956 (1969 Reenactment) § 11-23-1.

The defendant, Raul Vargas, and the victim, Angel Lopez, were involved in a heated discussion outside Louis’ Bar in Pawtucket sometime after midnight on September 4, 1976. It is not disputed that Angel Lopez provoked the confrontation by insulting defendant and his wife, and defendant testified that Lopez, challenged him to a fight with knives.
