On September 11, 1899, a civil action was commenced by Adam Taylor against Edward Baum before a justice of the peace of Doniphan county. At the same time an order of arrest was issued by the justice of the peace, directed to the sheriff of Doniphan county, and upon this order Baum was arrested on the 12th day of September in Brown county and taken to Doniphan county, where he was placed in the county jail.
