I/The defendant, Jaime Cortez,1 was tried before a jury on two counts of attempted second degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery. On the two charges of attempted second degree murder, the jury returned responsive verdicts of attempted manslaughter on one count and aggravated battery on the other. The defendant was convicted as charged on two counts of aggravated battery; on the third *591count of aggravated battery, the jury convicted him of the responsive verdict of simple battery.
