On July 15, 1983, the United States Department of the Army, acting through the Watervliet Arsenal, in Watervliet, New York, issued the first step in a two-step bidding process for the construction of a chrome-plating facility for the inner surfaces of 120-millimeter M256 cannon barrels mounted on the M1A1 tank.
