In April 1990, a jury convicted defendant, Scott Alan Morrison, in absentia, of four counts of theft by deception of property having a value in excess of $300, a Class 3 felony (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, pars. 16—1(b)(1), (e)(3)), and four counts of conspiracy to commit theft by deception of property having a value in excess of $300 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, pars. 8—2(a), 16—1(b)(1)). The trial court vacated the four conspiracy convictions and, in May 1990, sentenced defendant, in absentia, to an extended term of eight years’ imprisonment on each of the four counts of theft. The…
