Following a bench, trial, defendant was found guilty of the offenses of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery using a deadly weapon in violation of sections 12—4(a) and 12—4(b)(1) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1973, ch. 38, pars. 12—4(a) and 12—4(b)(1)), and not guilty of the offense of attempt (murder). (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1973, ch. 38, par. 8—4.)
