James E., the petitioner, appeals from the denial of his petition for a declaratory judgment and the denial of his posttrial motion by the circuit court of Madison County. He contends that the court misinterpreted the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Code (the Code) (405 ILCS 5/1 — 100 et seq. (West 2004)) when it ruled that he was required to tell the personnel at Gateway Regional Medical Center (Gateway) that he did not wish to reaffirm his voluntary admission status before the facility was obligated to either discharge him or file a petition seeking his involuntary admission.…
