On February 11, 2000, at around 1:00 p.m., the initial public offering (“IPO”) of 4,100,000 shares in webMethods, Inc. (“WEBM”), a technology company specializing in business-to-business communication, began to be publicly traded on the NASDAQ. In what seemed then the natural order of things and what, in retrospect, appears to have been “irrational exuberance,” the opening share price of $35 per share rose within minutes of public trading to $189, eventually rising to $215 later that day.
