Defendant, Harvey Allen, Jr., was convicted of four counts of murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1) and arson (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 38, par. 20 — 1) following a jury trial in the circuit court of Cook County. He was sentenced to natural life in prison without possibility of parole and to a concurrent term of seven years for the arson conviction. Prior to trial on these charges, defendant filed a motion to quash arrest and suppress evidence on the basis that he was arrested without probable cause.
