A melee which approached mutiny by an unruly crew on the coast of Angola, Africa, led to the brutal beating of Captain Bobby Roberts, Jr., the ship’s master. Roberts brought suit against his employer, Rigdon Marine Company (Rigdon), owner of the Iberville ship, for Jones Act negligence and for failure to provide a seaworthy crew and vessel. 1 A jury awarded Roberts a total of $1,505,000, including $1,150,000 in lost future earning capacity.
