A jury convicted the defendant of armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon (door frame and shod foot), and assault and battery.1 The only issue on appeal is whether the trial judge erroneously permitted a police detective to testify regarding his observations of tread , patterns appearing on the soles of the defendant’s sneakers.
