Mandile was found guilty of escape, G.L. c. 268, § 16, as appearing in St. 1973, c. 1062.1 On this appeal only *658questions relating to that conviction seem to be the subject of significant argument, although, as stated below, other charges were tried at the same time.
Mandile was confined in the maximum security unit of a house of correction (Deer Island) on April 7, 1980. About 8 p.m. Officers Hepburn and Nichols were there on duty.
