The defendant, Ronald D. Arpin (Arpin), was tried before a jury in the Superior Court and convicted of second-degree murder. Before the Superior Court the defendant relied on the defense of lack of criminal responsibility by reason of insanity. On appeal the defendant assigns as error a number of the trial justice’s rulings. He also urges us to grant him a new trial under the American Law Institute’s (ALI) test for legal insanity, the test this court recently adopted in State v. Johnson, 121 R.I. 254, 399 A.2d 469 (1979).
