The defendant was convicted by a Superior *608Court juiy of rape of a child under the age of sixteen (G. L. c. 265, § 23).1 A one-count indictment, returned on September 9, 1993, charged him with multiple acts of child abuse and rape. The indictment covered the period from on or about October 1, 1979, eight days short of the complainant’s fifteenth birthday, to on or about October 19, 1980, the date of the complainant’s sixteenth birthday.2
