The plaintiffs, Paul D. Edwards, Debra Kay Echols, and Denise Mayfield, filed this lawsuit on December 19, 1997, on behalf of themselves and a class of all current and future HIV-positive inmates in Alabama’s state-run prisons, to challenge the conditions of their confinement. They have named as defendants the Alabama Department of Corrections (DOC), its former commissioners Ron Jones and Joe S.
