CAPPY1, Justice.

We granted allocatur to consider whether an arbitration award, that failed to grant teachers credit for past years of service following a break in employment with respect to their *328placement on a salary schedule, can be upheld in light of certain provisions of the Pennsylvania School Code (School Code)2. For the reasons that follow, we find that the arbitrator’s award is violative of the School Code. Therefore, we reverse the order of the Commonwealth Court and reinstate the order of the Court of Common Pleas of Union County.
