On September 22, 1980, the defendant, Brad Lieberman, was found guilty of the offense of rape (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 11—1(a)). At that time, rape was a Class X felony (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 11—1(c)), the penalty for which was a determinate sentence of imprisonment of not less than 6 years and not more than 30 years (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1979, ch. 38, par. 1005—8—1(a)(3)). However, a defendant found guilty of a Class X felony was eligible for an extended-term sentence of not less than 30 years’ imprisonment and…
