This appeal presents us, for the first time, -with an opportunity to interpret the parental kidnapping statute, D.C.Code § 16-1022 (2012 Repl.), and to provide needed guidance on what the statute requires in terms of proof.1 The operative facts in this case are simple and undisputed: In contravention of a court instruction, Ms. Fleet went to Mr. Fleet’s workplace, with their fourteen-month-old daughter, with the intent to surreptitiously take the car that Mr. Fleet had been using.
