The appellee, the Louisville Bridge Company, undertook to construct a bridge from the Kentucky to the Indiana shore across the Ohio River at the head of the falls. It was necessary, in order to the successful prosecution of the work, to erect cribs along the line of the bridge about six or eight feet square, to fill the same with rock and sink them to the bottom of the river.
