August 11, 1904, appellee, with three other workmen, was engaged on the eighth floor of the Chicago Postoffice, then in process of construction, wheeling- on wheelbarrows from a freight elevator, or hoist, material to be used in the work of construction, and after the barrows had been emptied returning them again to the hoist, where they were lowered to the basement to be again refilled. The hoist was composed of two board platforms, each about 3% feet wide and perhaps 6 feet in length.
