EXUM, Justice.

This is a workers’ compensation case. Plaintiff, Benjamin A. Whitley, sustained injuries to his right arm and left hand while *90operating a bench saw in the employment of defendant Columbia Lumber Mfg. Co. The Industrial Commission concluded that plaintiff was totally and permanently disabled and entitled to compensation under N.C.G.S. § 97-29.1 On appeal to the Court of Appeals defendants did not dispute that plaintiff was totally and permanently disabled as that term is used in section 29.
