Following a trial by jury in the Superior Court, the defendant was convicted of nine counts of rape of a child under sixteen (G. L. c. 265, § 23)1 and of two counts of intimidation of a witness (G. L. c. 268, § 13B).2 The female complainant, who was eight years old when the incidents began, *290testified that the defendant forced her to engage in multiple acts of vaginal and anal intercourse which continued intermittently for nearly two years. The defendant’s appeal raises two closely related evidentiary issues.
