On the 29th of June, 1882, Robert Beasley was arrested upon a warrant issued by John Beckley, mayor of the Town of Becldey in the county of Raleigh, charging that on the 17th of June, 1882, said Beasley in the said town did sell, offer and expose tor sale, spirituous liquors, wine, porter, ale, beer and drinks of like nature in a certain hotel owned by Mrs. K. C. Beasley and kept by her and himself without a license therefor and in violation of the ordinance of the town of Beck-ley.” On the next day the defendant appeared in person and by counsel, and the case was tried before…
