SULLIVAN, J.

The defendant, Timothy Shashaty, was charged by a substitute information with escape in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-169 (a) (l),1 and interfering with an officer in violation of General Statutes § 53a-167a (a).2 The state alleged that the defendant had escaped from a correctional institution and interfered with a police officer who had helped return him to custody.
