A jury in the Superior Court convicted the defendant of murder in the first degree by reason of extreme atrocity or cruelty. The victim was the two and one-half year *85old son of the defendant’s girl friend. Represented by new counsel on appeal, the defendant claims that a new trial is warranted because of evidentiary errors in the admission of (a) a handwritten statement by the victim’s mother; (b) testimony of a police officer concerning criminal charges brought against the victim’s mother; and (c) an autopsy photograph depicting head injuries to the victim.1 The defendant also claims that…
