The plaintiff married the defendant in Washington, D.C. on May 30, 1953, and commenced this dissolution action in April, 1976, alleging that irreconcilable differences between them had irretrievably broken down their marriage. The defendant alleged by way of an affirmative defense that the marriage was invalid because the plaintiff was not legally divorced from her prior living husband at the time of her marriage to him.
