Defendant, Roger J. Hoekstra, filed a pro se postconviction petition (see 725 ILCS 5/122 — 1 et seq. (West 2004)) in the circuit court of Stephenson County, alleging that his attorney rendered ineffective assistance at trial. Defendant had previously entered a guilty plea to a charge of burglary (720 ILCS 5/19 — 1 (West 2004)) and was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment.
