Following a bench trial in the circuit court of Lake County, defendant, Shaster Smith, was convicted of armed robbery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 18 — 2) of a cab driver, attempted armed robbery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 8 — 4) of a jewelry store, unlawful use of weapons by a felon (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 24 — 1.1), and aggravated assault (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 12 — 2).
