Sullivan, J.

On December 5, 1987, plaintiff Rebecca Ledwith, living at the time with plaintiff Brian Margolin in Oregon, where they both were attending community college, was burned when, while attempting to light a gas lantern, concededly over 10 years old, the lantern exploded, injuring both Ledwith and Margolin. The couple had allegedly purchased the lantern, manufactured by defendant, Sears, Roebuck and Company, Inc., secondhand, at a Manhattan pawn shop.
