By the act, chapter 399 of the Laws of 1867, certain persons were incorporated as “ The How York Bridge Company,” for the purpose of constructing and maintaining a permanent bridge over the East river, between the cities of Hew York and Brooklyn. The capital stock of the company was fixed at $5,000,000, and full authority was conferred upon it to construct the bridge, and to acquire the necessary lands for that purpose.
