Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Adams County in which defendant, Gayla Davis, was found guilty of two counts of the aggravated battery of Shaunnalei Byrd (720 ILCS 5/12 — 4(a), 12 — • 4(b)(1) (West Supp. 1997) (as amended by Pub.
