The first of two issues raised by appellants is of transcendent importance. That issue is whether a police officer can be compelled to disclose the identity of an informer in a grand jury proceeding where the inquiry is not directed to the determination of the possible guilt of a specified person, but is a general quest as to who might have committed a crime.
