Defendant Stephen Karjala was charged with the offense of driving under the influence of alcoholic liquor in violation of section 11— 501(a) of the Illinois Vehicle Code (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1985, ch. 9572, par. 11 — 501(a)) after he was discovered asleep behind the steering wheel of his car with the motor running in the municipal parking lot of Galva, Illinois, at 12:20 a.m. on December 11, 1986.
