Defendants challenge the district court’s entry of a default judgment, subsequently *914assessed in the amount of $73 million, for disregarding certain court orders and for failing to appear at trial. Defendants argue that the district court did not have the authority to impose default as a sanction under Fed.R.Civ.P. 55 and that the court abused its discretion in holding that their behavior warranted such a draconian order.
