The defendants, former high sheriff of New London county Gerard E. Egan, former chief deputy sheriff Thomas Connors, former special deputy sheriffs Martin Lane, Daniel Tamborra, Richard Miller, and the state of Connecticut, appeal1 from the judgment *303of the trial court denying their motion to dismiss the complaint of the plaintiff, James L.
