I
We know the sheriff has been shot and killed. We know who did it. We know the community's sense of loss and outrage, for we are a part of that community. The judicial function divines the legal consequences of this dastardly act.
Not every killing is legally murder. Even where the victim is a peace officer, the positive law of this state — depending upon the facts — defines several genera and species of homicide with life or death differences in punishment.
