When, in 1927, the United States Supreme Court decided the case of Baltimore & Ohio R. R. Co. v. Goodman (275 U. S. 66), it Was generally recognized that the decision presented a new doctrine on the subject of contributory negligence in a railroad crossing case — at least in those States where the “ stop, look and listen ” rule was not already operative. The court laid down definite rules of human conduct.
