SQUIRES, Judge:

Contrary to his pleas, appellant was convicted by a general court-martial of being absent without leave (AWOL) from his Fort Bragg, North Carolina, unit and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, in violation of Articles 86 and 112a, Uniform Code of Military Justice, 10 U.S.C. §§ 886 and 912a (1988) [hereinafter UCMJ]. The officer and enlisted members sentenced him to a bad-conduct discharge, confinement for four years, forfeiture of $437.00 pay per month for four years, and reduction to Private El.
