The Utah Light & Traction Company, a corporation owning and operating a street railway system in Salt Lake City and suburbs, hereinafter called defendant, made application to the Public Utilities Commission of Utah, hereinafter called commission. The defendant made application to the commission in due form to be permitted to increase or raise the fares for transportation on its street railway system for the alleged purpose of meeting the increased costs and expenses incident to the maintenance and operation of its railway system in Salt Lake City and suburbs.
