We set forth the facts asserted by the losing party as background to the complaint.1 The facts, which are largely undisputed,2 were not in the plaintiff’s complaint. On October 27, 1989, the defendant, P.R. (mother), who was not *221then married, gave birth to K.M (child). The mother had been living with the plaintiff for several months before the birth. The plaintiff is not the biological father of the child. The plaintiff attended child birth classes with the mother and was in the delivery room when the child was born.
