This is an action by respondent to recover from appellant both actual and punitive damages for an alleged violation of Section 5064 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri 1939, which reads as follows:

“Whenever any employee of any corporation doing business in his (sic) State shall be discharged or voluntarily quit the service of such corporation, it shall be the duty of the superintendent or manager of said corporation, upon the request of such employee (if such employee shall have been in the service of said corporation for a period of at least ninety days), to issue such employee a letter,…
