J. L. Hudgins brought his action for slander in the Circuit Court for the city of Norfolk against Chesapeake Ferry Company and DeWitt C. Eldredge, its general manager. The declaration contained two counts. One charges slander under the common law. The other charges the use of insulting words under section 5781, Virginia Code 1919.
