CUDAHY, Circuit Judge.

Plaintiffs-appellants John, Barbara, and Frederick Ellis appeal from a jury verdict in favor of defendants City of Chicago and Police Officer Frank Kusar in a suit for damages brought under the Fourteenth Amendment and 42 U.S.C. § 1983 (1976). Plaintiffs challenge several evidentiary rulings made by the district court, as well as the giving of a jury instruction which, plaintiffs allege, materially misstated the elements of their statutory claim.
