Anthan worked as an air traffic controller in St. Louis and was a member of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) until approximately July 9, 1975. While in St. Louis Anthan disagreed with the approach of the PATCO local to labor-management relations. As a result, Anthan was shunned by some of the controllers and received a marked lack of cooperation and coordination.
